*One of the top January events of every boys basketball season is the Buffalo Public Schools' MLK Classic Saturday. This year's event is hosted by City Honors in its new gymnasium. The four-game lineup is divided into two sessions: Lafayette faces Lackawanna at 11 a.m. followed by St. Joe's meeting OTC Middle College at 12:30 p.m.; in the second session, McKinley faces Sweet Home at 3 p.m. followed by a 4:30 p.m. matchup of the No. 1 small school in International Prep at Grover Cleveland against No. 4 large school Canisius.

*Other top matchups this week in boys basketball include big early Yale Cup Division I (large school) showdowns as No. 8 large school East is at No. 10 McKinley at 5:30 p.m. today and McKinley heads to No. 5 large school Riverside at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. In the Monsignor Martin Association, Canisius hosts No. 2 small school St. Mary's tonight at 7:30. Bishop Timon-St. Jude, ranked sixth among large schools with an 8-0 record, faces two serious tests as it heads to Williamsville East tonight at 7:30 p.m. and hosts No. 9 large school St. Joe's on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in one of the top early battles of the Monsignor Martin Association season. Also on Thursday, former longtime Grover Cleveland coach Earl Schunk returns to Grover with his No. 5 small school Tapestry Charter at 5:30 p.m.

*Grand Island girls basketball coach Jenepher Banker recorded her 200th career win last week. She will be honored before tonight's home game against North Tonawanda at 6:30 p.m. Banker's 200-85 record in 13 seasons includes four Section VI Class A titles and two Niagara Frontier League crowns. The Vikings are currently ranked No. 1 in the state in Class A. The game of the week is on Wednesday when Nichols and Sacred Heart meet at Villa Maria College at 6:30 p.m. in a rematch of last year's Monsignor Martin Association finals.

*The 17th annual Lockport Boosters/Sunrise Optimists Wrestling Tournament is Friday and Saturday. Falconer will host the 11th annual Patrick Morales Invitational and the Alden Boosters Dual Meet is also this weekend. Williamsville North and Franklinville host tournaments Saturday.

*The Canisius and Timon hockey teams meet Thursday at 3 p.m. at Riverside. The teams split in their two previous meetings with Timon winning the last game, 5-4, in overtime.

*The Canisius and St. Joe's swimming teams meet on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the ECC Flickinger Center.

*The Lancaster Fieldhouse will host an indoor track Varsity Select Meet on Friday. On Saturday is the Group A/B Championship meets starting at 9 a.m. The WNY Relays are at 9 a.m. Monday at Fredonia State.

*ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMS: Coaches and athletic directors of all public and private schools in Western New York are encouraged to nominate athletes from all winter sports for selection to the All-Western New York Scholar Athlete Team. Nominees must be seniors who are starters or important reserves and have an average of 90 or above. Nomination forms are available via www.section6.e1b.org. Nominations are due to the Section VI office by March 1. The News will print a scholar-athlete team picture.

*HALL OF FAME: Starpoint named four former athletes and one former coach to its eighth annual Sports Wall of Fame class to be honored Jan. 21 before the boys varsity basketball game against Williamsville South. The class includes: Dave Elliott (1974), Colleen Sowinski (1987), Kurt Hollasch (1988), Rob Fraass (1989) and coach Larry Kus. A reception for inductees and their guests will be held in the high school cafeteria prior to the event with the ceremony beginning at approximately 6:15 p.m. in the gymnasium.
