Live: Bona vs. Charlotte

Third Overtime

6:24 p.m.: Once again, Charlotte controls the tip.

4:20 left: Adegboye gets loose in the open court, draws a foul going to the basket. He hits both and Bona leads, 81-79.

3:20 left: After Sherrill ties it for the 49ers, Adegboye goes back to line. He hits both again and Bona leads, 83-81.

2:04 left: After a Barnett three and a Davenport field goal, Conger goes to the line for Bona. On the 49ers' last possession, Green drove but Nicholson forced him to throw a bad pass back toward half court that Conger grabbed and went the other way. He hits both and Bona leads, 87-84.

:35.1 seconds left: Sherrill didn't call bank, but it counts. His elbow jumper makes it 87-86, Bona in front with the ball. Solid, solid play on both ends. It's a cliche, but it's a shame one of these teams is going to lose.

:12. 4 seconds left: Wow. Adegboye's layup gave Bona a three-point lead. Sherrill then had a toe on the three-point line when he hit his jumper, so Bona leads, 89-88. Make that 90-88 after Cook hits 1 of 2 FTs after being fouled.

:1.6 left: Green's jumper that would have tied it spins out. Cook gets the rebound for Bona and is fouled. He hits the first free throw, making it 91-88, then Charlotte coach Alan Major signals for a timeout. Cook will have one more FT to ice the game when we come back.

He makes it. Bona leads, 92-88.

0.0 left: FINAL, 92-88, ST. BONAVENTURE WINS. Off for quotes now. We'll have a game analysis on this blog later, and check out the game story in Sunday's News.

Second Overtime

6:07 p.m.: Here we go again. I'm putting in for overtime (kidding, of course). Charlotte again controls the tip.

3:16 left: Green puts Charlotte up two on a great drive after both teams went scoreless on their first two possessions of the second OT.

2:44 left: Nicholson, who has 30 points, is back at the line. He knocks down another pair to tie the game at 77.

2:07 left: Davenport is called for his fourth foul, holding on Green. That's a tough matchup for Bona. Green is lightning quick. Green hits both ends of a 1-and-1. Charlotte leads, 79-77.

1:45 left: Full timeout for the Bonnies. Davenport missed a corner three. The ball then went out of bounds, and it will stay with SBU. That looked like a questionable call.

:39.1 left: Adegboye gets to the rack past Briscoe, but his layup spins out. He's fouled and will shoot two. He misses BOTH. Brutal. Still tied. Adegboye is 2 of 10 from the field today.

:23.5 left: Let's do this again. Charlotte takes timeout, setting up a third chance at a winning possession. There's 20 on the shot clock.

:1.6 left: Triple wow. Quadruple wow. I don't know what I'm on. Green misses a deep three with Adegboye in his face. The rebound bounces around and Green gets it. He looks like he has a step, but is called for a double dribble. Bona takes a full timeout. Third OT looming.

0.0 left: And off to the third overtime we go. Olean native Jake Houseknecht makes his first appearance in the game to throw the inbounds pass. It misses everyone and goes out under the Bona basket, but officials confer and rule the ball was tipped, so the clock runs out.

Bona has two timeouts left, while Charlotte has one remaining.

5:55 p.m.: Bonus basketball. Here we go. Charlotte wins tip.

4:09 left: Sherrill tackles Nicholson, who will shoot two with SBU in the double bonus. Nicholson knocks them both in and it's tied at 70.

2:22 left: Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt calls timeout after his team can't get the ball inbounds under their basket. Charlotte leads, 73-72, after Burnett hit a three and Conger made a runner in the lane. Bonnies have possession with 20 seconds on the shot clock.

1:43 left: Adeboye goes to the line with SBU up one, 74-73. He gave them the lead on the Bonnies' last possession with a nice drive for a layup. He was fouled by Wilderness grabbing a rebound on the defensive end. He hits 1 of 2 and Bona is up, 75-73.

:23.9 seconds left: Crazy sequence. Davenport recovers from a head fake for a great block on Green, then mistakenly tries to go coast-to-coast. He misses a running layup, and Charlotte grabs the rebound and calls timeout.

0.0 left: Un-Bona-lieveable. We're going to a second overtime. This time it's Briscoe who misses a contested shot in the lane as the Bonnies were able to force Green to give up possession. Remember, Bona played four OTs on Dec. 18 against Ohio.

Second Half

5:02 p.m.: Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.

18:03 left: Fourth foul on Charlotte's Braswell, for clearing out on Nicholson. I don't want to say the Bona star gets every call, but he gets every call.

17:32 left: Loose ball on the floor and Charlotte is granted the timeout. Nicholson needs to get on the floor after that ball. He's super-talented, but he needed to show more desire there. If I'm being hard on a guy who had 15 points in the first half, maybe so, but talent alone won't get him to the next level. He's not THAT good. He needs to show he wants it.

16:43 left: Briscoe with a three-pointer, and just like that it's a two-point game. Briscoe hit a layup on the previous possession, getting away with a clear travel.

16:24 left: And we've got a tie game, 40-40. Wilderness hits a layup after a Briscoe steal at midcourt.

15:53 left: Simmons gets his first point of the game for Bona, grabbing an offensive rebound after a Nicholson miss and putting it back in for a 42-40 lead. Nicholson has missed shots on three straight Bona possessions. SBU will have the ball coming out of this media timeout.

15:00 left: Big three from Adegboye, who hasn't done much on the offensive end for SBU. That makes it 45-50.

14:00 left: Nicholson has picked it up the last couple minutes, forcing a miss on defense and then getting a trip to the line. He sinks both and SBU is up, 47-40.

13:45 left: Talking with people in Olean, Davenport runs hot and cold for the Bonnies. He's been good today, as he just got a steal and finished the fast break with a layup. He was fouled on the play, converted the three-point play and just like that SBU has its 10-point lead back, 50-40.

12:42 left: Some sloppy play by both sides. Wright turned it over for the Bonnies, then got it back when Charlotte's Dewhurst did the same. Wright got a chance at the other end, but missed both free throws.

11:59 left: Bona's Marquise Simmons goes down with what looked to be a knee injury after crashing into a Charlotte player under the SBU basket. Charlotte scored on the 5-on-4 possession to make it 50-42 before the officials stopped the play. Simmons is being looked at by trainers on the Bona bench.

9:59 left: Timeout Charlotte after Briscoe buries a three from the right wing. Bonnies are hanging on right now, up 53-47.

9:16 left: Another three for Charlotte, this one by Barnett, and it's panic time in Olean. SBU up, 53-50.

8:06 left: Nice pick-and-pop by Charlotte, with the 6-8 Braswell knocking down a long jumper. Conger then turns it over for Bona and makes matterrs worse by fouling Briscoe on a three attempt. The 49ers' guard knocks down all three and it's tied, 55-55.

8:01 left: Adegboye hits both ends of a 1-and-1. Free-throw shooting will be big down the stretch.

7:04 left: Media timeout, with it tied, 57-57. Dewhurst hit a reverse layup to tie it, then Davenport turned it over for the Bonnies. After going of 3 of 11 from three-point range in the first 20 minutes, Charlotte is 4 of 5 from long range in the second half.

4:45 left: Great strip of Briscoe by Davenport in the lane. Davenport then gets on a loose ball (by diving to the floor and calling a timeout. Excellent sequence). Bonnies lead, 61-59, as Nicholson has their last four points. He's getting position down on the block and Charlotte isn't doing enough to stop him from catching the ball.

4:01 left: 49ers take the lead, as Barnett calmly knocks down another three. It's 62-61 Charlotte. At the other end, Nicholson picks up his third foul on a push after Charlotte recovered a loose ball.

3:14 left: I said to another media member in the first half that it looked like Nicholson might have three-point range. He just showed it there, knocking down a huge shot from the left wing. It's tied at 64. If Bona is going to pull this out, it will be because of Nicholson.

1:52 left: Braswell has fouled out for Charlotte on a loose-ball foul. On the 49ers' previous possession, he got inside Nicholson and scored to give Charlotte a 66-64 lead. Cook will be shooting 1-and-1 for Bona coming out of this media timeout.

1:52 left: Cook makes them both. Clutch. Tied at 66.

:44.5 seconds left: Pull-up jumper by Green, Charlotte's leading scorer, gives the 49ers a two-point lead, 68-66. Timeout, Bona, with the ball.

:14 seconds left: Jones fouls out for Charlotte after Conger pulls down an offensive rebound after Adegboye misses an out-of-control layup attempt. Conger misses BOTH, but Charlotte's Sherrill holds Cook on the offensive rebound. Whoa.

:12.9 seconds left: Cook makes both. Tied again.

:7.9 seconds left: Thirty-second timeout, Charlotte. Setting up a chance to win the game. We're tied at 68. These teams are putting on a show for me.

0.0 left: OVERTIME. Green's runner in the lane just misses, as does the tip attempt by Sherrill. Green can really get to the rack. He blew by Davenport, and just barely missed ending the game. Whoa, again.

First Half

Starters for Bona are: F Demitrius Conger, F Da'Quan Cook, F Andrew Nicholson, G Ogo Adegboye, G Michael Davenport.

Charlotte starters: G Jamar Briscoe, G Derrio Green, F Javarris Barnett, F An'Juan Wilderness, C Chris Braswell.

4:05 p.m.: Charlotte controls the tip, and we're underway.

18:34 left: Steal by Davenport, who opened the scoring earlier hitting 1 of 2 FTs. Charlotte seems content slowing the pace, while Bona has pushed it its first few possessions.

17:16 left: Wow. Lightning-quick 8-0 run by Charlotte. Back-to-back threes by Green and Barnett around a miss by Nicholson, then a steal and layup by Briscoe. 8-1, 49ers.

14:57 left: First media timeout, Charlotte up, 8-5. Bona has been content to let Barnett shoot from outside. After hitting his first three, he's missed two straight. The Bonnies got a long field goal from Nicholson and a nice drive by Conger for a layup. Both teams going straight man-to-man on defense so far.

11:08 left: Offensive foul on 49ers center Phil Jones, a 6-foot-10 senior. Nice job by Nicholson of taking the contact and drawing the foul. Bonnies have done a good job of denying entry passes and forced Charlotte to settle for outside shots. Charlotte made a substitution, taking out Wilderness and Braswell for Jones and K.J. Sherrill in an effort to get more inside production. It's 14-10 Bona. Nicholson's got nine points already.

10:44 left: Three-pointer for Matt Wright and Bona's up 17-10.

9:25 left: Full timeout by Charlotte, which has no answer right now for Matt Wright. He's come off the bench to score eight straight points for the Bonnies. Wright hit back-to-back threes, then got an easy dunk in transition after a Bona steal. Bonnies fans are eating it up, with the score 22-10.

7:36 left: Another media timeout, with the score 25-14 Bona. Charlotte has had a couple good possessions in a row, but fell asleep defensively and allowed Davenport to get open in the corner for a three-pointer as the shot clock was winding down. Charlotte has turned the ball over six times, to just three for SBU.

6:46 left: Davenport hits another long jumper off the dribble. If those keep going, Bona will be tough to beat. Barnett answers, though, with a three-pointer on the other end. Cook makes 1 of 2 from the foul line, and it's 28-17 SBU.

6:00 left: Sweet backdoor cut and reverse layup for Davenport, and it's 30-17 Bona.

5:09 left: Two straight big possessions from Charlotte's Charles Dewhurst off the bench. He gets open underneath for a layup, follows that up with a steal and layup and then Charlotte gets another steal. It's 30-21 now.

4:20 left: Nicholson draws a foul against Jones on a post move that the 49ers' bench hated. Nicholson makes both, SBU stops an 8-0 Charlotte run and leads, 32-23.

3:25 left: Cook got open underneath for a dunk on the Bonnies' last trip, which gave them a 34-23 lead. Green missed a wide-open three for the 49ers. Charlotte, however, is getting better looks on the offensive end in the last five minutes or so. Nicholson has 11, Davenport and Wright eight each for SBU. Barnett leads Charlotte with eight.

1:16 left: Great drive and finish by Briscoe, who takes the hit from Nicholson and finishes the drive. He hits the free throw to make it 36-28 SBU.

:25 seconds left: Nicholson caught a break there. After making a great steal and center court, he went the other way and airballed a layup (really). He caught the miss and put it in for an easy bucket, but it should have been a travel. Of course, Nicholson was grabbed on the play, so it should have been a foul before that, so it all evens out in the end.

4:47 p.m.: Halftime, with Bona up, 40-28.

Notes: Nicholson leads Bona with 15 points. He's 6 of 9 from the field and played the entire first half, as did Adegboye. No surprise there, as he came into the game averaging 40.5 minutes per game. Yes, that's more than a full game. That's what happens when you play a four-OT game. Well, that and you don't have a backup point guard who you trust. Bona is shooting 62.5 percent from the field. That's a recipe for success.

OLEAN -- Hello from the Reilly Center, where St. Bonaventure is set to host Charlotte this afternoon. It's the Bonnies' Atlantic 10 opener, and my first trip here to cover them, so I'm excited.

Lloyd Banks' "Start It Up" greeted me walking into the gym, and that's exactly what we're going to do in about 20 minutes. Took the 219 down through Ellicottville. Beautiful drive, but not one I'd like to make in a lot of snow.

As for the game, St. Bonaventure enters with an 8-5 overall record. There have been some good wins, like over St. John's of the Big East, and the four-OT thriller here against Ohio last month, and some head-scratchers, like the 10-point loss to Canisius.

Charlotte enters at 8-7 overall and 0-1 in A-10 play, having dropped its league opener at Richmond on Wednesday, 71-59. The 49ers have three players averaging in double figures, junior guard Derrio Green (13.2 points per game), sophomore G Jamar Briscoe (12.3 ppg) and sophomore center Chris Braswell (10.2 ppg, 7.1 rebounds per game.

Tip is scheduled for 4:05 p.m., so we'll be back then.
