LAUGH TRACK -- Buffalo Clown Alley shines the spotlight on the Shriners at its January meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Cleveland Heights Christian Church, 4774 Union Road, Cheektowaga. John Ruff of the Shriners will tell how the Shriners work their lighthearted magic. Guests and newcomers are welcome.

CONE KIDS -- Today marks the start of the 30th annual Cones for Kids fundraiser in Friendly's Restaurants, which benefits Easter Seals and those living with disabilities and special needs. It continues through Feb. 13.

Every Friendly's customer who makes a $5 donation to Easter Seals New York gets a coupon book redeemable for three free kids' meals or Happy Ending sundaes, plus a coupon for $5 off a $25 purchase. Since 1981, the drive has raised more than $25 million.

GOOD DEED -- Brightening the holidays on the other side of the world were 12 members of the Williamsville School District's Maple East Brownie Troop 962. They collected donations throughout the fall and took in enough money to buy 290 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, which they sent off to local soldiers in Afghanistan.

MILITARY NOTES -- Two Western New Yorkers recently completed Army basic training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. They are:

*Pvt. Michael C. Lukowski, son of Marnie Dow and stepson of Mike Dow of Williamsville. He is a June graduate of Clarence High School.

*Pvt. Tyler A. Frustochi, son of Paul Frustochi of Batavia. He also has completed advanced infantry training.
