Two M&T Bank branches about three miles apart on Buffalo's East Side were robbed within 15 minutes of each other about noon Friday.
The branch in the Broadway Market was hit at about 11:55 a.m. At 12:10 p.m., the branch at 3037 Bailey Avenue near Kensington Avenue was robbed.
In each holdup, the robber handed the teller a note, then made off with an undisclosed amount of money, Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda said.
Witnesses to the holdup in the Broadway Market believe the robber was a woman, possibly wearing novelty "2011" New Year's glasses.
In the second heist, a male bandit entered an apparent getaway vehicle on Davidson Avenue, according to witnesses. The vehicle was described as having two doors and was dark in color.
Police spokesman Michael DeGeorge said investigators are not sure if the robberies are connected.
"But certainly the proximity in time is leading us to look into that possibility," DeGeorge said.
Police are examining bank surveillance footage of the holdups.
