William L. Miethaner, Ph.D., formerly of Williamsville, a retired director of microbiology and immunology at Buffalo General Hospital, died Dec. 13 in Beechwood Nursing Home, Getzville. He was 76.
Born in Buffalo, he earned his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from the University at Buffalo.
Dr. Miethaner was a microbiologist at Buffalo General Hospital for 34 years and retired as director of microbiology and immunology at the hospital in 1999.
While at Buffalo General, he also was a consultant in the microbiology laboratory at Sisters Hospital. In addition, he taught microbiology at the University at Buffalo for many years.
Dr. Miethaner was a member of the American Association of Blood Banks, American Society for Microbiology and the New York Academy of Sciences. He also was a member of the national medical fraternity Sigma Psi and the Infectious Disease Control Committee at Buffalo General Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, the former Earldene Forrester; and two sons, David W. and Robert J.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 8 in North Presbyterian Church, 300 N. Forest Road, Amherst.
