Syd's birthday bash
Dave Gutierrez, guitarist with Irving Klaws and devout Syd Barrett fan, has assembled a full roster for his annual Birthday Tribute Show honoring the late co-founder of Pink Floyd. The show takes place at 9 p.m. Thursday in Mohawk Place (47 E. Mohawk St.).
One of the most delightfully unusual songwriters in the history of British rock, Barrett is revered by a sizable worldwide subculture for whom Pink Floyd's "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" -- the only full album the band made with Barrett as leader and principal songwriter -- is akin to a sacred religious text. Even now, more than 40 years after its release, "Piper" still stands as the authoritative statement on Barrett's considerable talents, even if he did go on to record a pair of solo albums before retiring from music forever at the beginning of the '70s. Considering this, it's not difficult to understand the enthusiasm with which Gutierrez's annual birthday celebration concerts have been received.
At Thursday's gig, expect to see a wide variety of musicians and bands interpreting Barrett's works, both with Pink Floyd and without. Since he started the annual shows, Gutierrez has been adamant that no two performers cover the same song during the evening, a problem he's avoided by urging all participants to "sign up" for their Barrett song of choice.
