Ring in tradition

Yes, there are some fun, nontraditional ways to ring in the New Year. But we would be remiss if we didn't give out the details for Buffalo's biggest New Year's Eve celebration, First Night Buffalo, a drug- and alcohol-free event, and the ball drop.

Festivities are from 5 to 10 p.m. today in the Buffalo Convention Center and include a performance by Terry Buchwald as Elvis, a scavenger hunt, storybook land, laser tag, amusement rides, ice skating, a visit from Nickel City Reptiles and Exotics, comedy hypnotist the Incredible Boris, and the Western New York United Against Drug & Alcohol Abuse Art & Poetry Gallery.

Tickets are $10 at the door. Free parking is available at the Buffalo Civic Auto Ramps at Main Place Mall, Fernbach Ramp and Turner Ramp. For the full schedule of events, visit www.firstnightbuffalo.org.

Afterward, head over to the Iskalo Electric Tower near Main and Huron streets, for the 23rd annual ball drop. Entertainment starts at 10:30 p.m. with a concert headlined by More Than Me, the locally based rock band that recently performed at the Hard Rock calling concert in London. The ball drop will usher in the New Year at midnight.
