LOCAL NEWS BRIEFS

Warmer temperatures, rain boost chances of flooding

Western New York is in for a New Year's meltdown.

Temperatures are forecast to climb into the upper 40s today as a year-end rush of warm Southern air spreads over the region and peaks about 50 on Saturday before colder, more seasonable weather returns.

If the mild air doesn't dissolve the snow we have on the ground, then the rain will. A few showers are expected later today and up to half an inch of rain is predicted for Saturday. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather alert for the possibility of ice jam flooding on Saturday in area creeks and streams.

$1,500 grant to continue work aiding city's youth

SALAMANCA -- The Community Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation has issued a grant of $1,500 to the Friends of the Salamanca Youth Bureau to help fund its "Fill a Backpack" program.

The program, a collaborative effort between the Youth Bureau, Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cattaraugus Community Action and Salamanca schools, provides backpacks filled with food and other necessities to Salamanca students in need. The program receives some food donations from the Food Bank of Western New York, but it also relies on donations from individuals.

The program was originally created by Pat Standish of the Wyoming County Community Action Program.
