BELL, Hugh M.
BELL - Hugh M. Age 85, of Cooper City, FL, passed away on December 27, 2010. He was born in Buffalo, NY, and following his graduation from Kenmore H.S. in 1943, enlisted in the U.S. Army. Hugh served in Europe in 1944-45 as a staff sergeant with the 104th Infantry (Timberwolves), and was awarded a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. Hugh graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton Business School, in 1949 and began work with Buffalo Slag Co. where he rose to President of the company. He married wife Joan in 1950. In 1975, Hugh became President of a steel mill service company (The Levy Co.) in Burns Harbor, IN, and moved the family to Valparaiso, IN. Upon retirement, Hugh entered law school at Valparaiso University and graduated in 1987. He then moved to South Florida where he practiced law with family members from 1988-98. At the same time, Hugh and Joan split time at the family home in Fairfield Glade, TN. They returned to Florida full time in 2005. Hugh was an avid outdoorsman, taking the family on many camping and backpacking trips to the Rocky Mountains, Smokey Mountains, Canada and upstate New York. Hugh spent most of his free time devoted to the activities of his children and grandchildren. He truly was "The Leader Of The Band." Hugh was active throughout his life in church and veterans organizations. Hugh was loved and respected by family and countless friends for his kindness, wisdom and wit. Hugh was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Joan. He is survived by his five children: Wendy Pilkey of Cooper City, FL; Greg Bell (Ronda) of Louisville, KY; Jeff Bell of Cooper City, FL; Brian Bell of Valparaiso, IN; and Laurie Reppas (Greg) of Lillington, NC. He is also survived by nine loving grandchildren: Derrick Bell (Jennifer) of Union, NJ; Alysha Pilkey of NY, NY; Samantha Pilkey of NY, NY; Matthew Bell of Killeen, TX; Maggie Bell of San Antonio, TX; Campbell Pilkey of Cooper City, FL; Travis Bell of San Antonio, TX; Tyler Bell of Gainesville, FL; Kelsey Bell of Jacksonville, FL; and his beloved yellow-lab, K.C. A Memorial Service will be held at Luther Memorial Church, 1925 N. 60 Ave, Hollywood, FL, 33021, on January 2, 2011, at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
