Thunderbirds to be featured in return of annual air show

NIAGARA FALLS -- After a one-year absence, the 2011 Thunder Over Niagara air show will return with the Air Force Thunderbirds on Sept. 10 and 11.

The free show, sponsored by the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station and the Niagara Military Affairs Council, will feature a wide variety of military aircraft, aerobatic airplanes and vintage warbirds -- in performance and on display. The two-day event will be held at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.

Last year's show, which was scheduled May 8 and 9, was canceled when the main act, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds Demonstration Team, dropped out of the event.

$19,500 in grants to fund art commissioning, garden

Grants totaling $19,500 will finance a major work of art and a garden in the historic Michigan Street African-American Cultural Heritage Corridor.

The grants will be announced today -- the first day of Kwanzaa -- during a news conference outside Michigan Street Baptist Church, 511 Michigan Ave.

On hand for the announcement will be Ellicott Council Member Curtis Haynes Jr. and representatives of the church, Nash House, the Colored Musicians Club, the Langston Hughes Institute and Generation NOW. The grants include seed money to commission the work by digital artist Stephen Marc as well as money to establish the Bishop William Henderson Sacred Garden.


Supervisor of Grand Island appointed to four-year term

Grand Island Supervisor Peter A. McMahon has been appointed to a four-year term on the Niagara River Greenway Commission by Gov. David A. Paterson.

McMahon, 69, is a former chief of the Grand Island Volunteer Fire Department and was elected supervisor in 1997. The Greenway Commission was formed to develop a plan for a system of parks, trails and green spaces along the Niagara River from Buffalo to Youngstown.


Application deadline looms for enrollment in 2011-12

Parents living in the City of Buffalo who plan to enroll their children in a public school in 2011-12 have until Jan. 4 to submit an application with the district.

Applications are available at Central Registration, 33 Ash St., and at all public elementary schools in the city.

On the application, parents can list five schools they would like their child to attend, in order of their preference. Seventy percent of elementary students get their No. 1 choice, according to Jacquelyn Ross Brown, director of the Central Processing Center.

Students are assigned to schools through a computerized lottery.

Children who will be in kindergarten in 2011-12 must be 5 on or before Dec. 31, 2011; prekindergartners must be 4 by then. Visit Select Departments, and then Central Registration Center.
