Programs to celebrate seven days of Kwanzaa

All programs run from 7 to 9 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

*Dec. 26: Umoja/Unity -- Opening ceremony at Buffalo Academy of the Visual and Performing Arts, 450 Masten Ave. Also, a Children's Kwanzaa will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at New Skateland, 33 E. Ferry St.

*Dec. 27: Kujichagulia/Self Determination -- Poetry and the African-American Dance Troupe at the African-American Cultural Center, 350 Masten Ave.

*Dec. 28: Ujima/Collective Work & Responsibility -- Kwanzaa founder Maulana Karenga is guest speaker at the Frank E. Merriweather Jr. Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave.

*Dec. 29: Ujamaa/Cooperative Economics -- Gospel music, open mic and a spiritual feast at Ha'niah Tabernacle of God, 900 Genesee St.

*Dec. 30: Nia/Purpose -- Holistic health panel, featuring 2010 gubernatorial candidate Charles Barron of the Freedom Party at Pratt Willert Community Center, 422 Pratt St.

*Dec. 31: Kuumba/Creativity -- Feast and open mic night at JFK Center, 114 Hickory St. Bring a dish to share (no red meat, alcohol or pork).

*Jan. 1: Imani/Faith -- Spend the day at home with family and friends reflecting and focusing on what was learned during Kwanzaa.
