Five Spot / Quick hitters on the light side

1. SECOND CHOICE

Jacques Lemaire has been brought back out of retirement to coach the Devils for the third time. The Devils called Brett Favre, but they couldn't wait two weeks for Favre to retire first.

2. RIGHT AT HOME

San Diego went all out to make Navy feel welcome at the Poinsettia Bowl Thursday. However, flooding the parking lots so that the team would have to take a submarine to the game probably was overdoing it.

3. EVERYTHING MUST GO

Analysts say it's been a banner holiday shopping season for consumers. And that doesn't include sales of Marshawn Lynch and Trent Edwards jerseys that are marked 70 percent off at JCPenney.

4. NO DAYS OFF

Kyle Williams picked up a half-sack earlier this week when the NFL issued its revised game statistics from Sunday. Now that's the mark of a great NFL defender -- someone who can get credit for tackling quarterbacks on Wednesdays.

5. LEAST OF HIS PROBLEMS

Records show Watergate Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox expressed "extreme interest" in a 1970s criminal investigation of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner for illegal campaign contributions. You'd think keeping track of Richard Nixon would have kept Cox busy.
