Police exam set for April 23 open to qualified candidates

Buffalo's Police Department is looking for qualified people to take the police exam on April 23.

The city, which plans to hire about 40 new police officers in the coming year, has launched a recruitment campaign. The deadline for registration is March 16.

To qualify, applicants must meet a number of requirements: 19 to 35 years old as of the exam date; resident of Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Wyoming, Cattaraugus or Chautauqua counties for at least 90 days before March 16; and having at least 60 college credit hours or two years of continuous military service.

Visit or contact the city's 311 calling center.

A group of police ambassadors will recruit potential candidates at local malls, colleges, universities, churches and community centers. Officials said the campaign also gives people a chance to meet one-on-one with police officers.

225 homes in Parkside area to be without power Monday

About 225 households in the city's Parkside area will be without electric power for up to nine hours Monday, as part of a planned outage to make repairs, National Grid officials said.

The homes on Summit, Crescent, Woodward and Parkside avenues are expected to lose their power from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., although the repairs could be done more quickly.

The area was the scene of an approximately 15-hour outage on Oct. 26, due to a cable failure. Some repairs already have been made.

"We're at the point now where the rest of the repairs require an outage," National Grid spokesman Patrick Stella explained.
