Katherine C. Bassett, active as an alumna of Buffalo Seminary and Vassar College, died Dec. 13 in her Buffalo home. She was 78.
Born Katherine Crandell in Duluth, Minn., she came to Buffalo with her family as a girl and was a 1950 graduate of Buffalo Seminary, serving as president of the Athletic Board in her senior year. She was a 1954 Vassar graduate.
Mrs. Bassett and her mother, the late Katherine Crandell, ran the Vassar Pecan fundraising sale that helped provide scholarships to the college.
She served as president of the Buffalo Seminary Graduates Association from 1983 to 1985, received the school's Outstanding Service Award and was named an honorary trustee in 2008. The school recently dedicated two new squash courts in her name.
Known to her friends as "Kitsy," she was a member of the Junior League, the Garret Club, the Cherry Hill Club, the Trinity Center and the International Institute. She served as a trustee on many boards and enjoyed tennis, opera, bridge and travel.
Her husband, Kingman Sr., an investment analyst and former Erie County Water Authority chairman, died in 1993.
Surviving are a son, Kingman Jr., and two daughters, Katherine "Kate" and Mary Bassett Wilson.
A memorial service was held Tuesday in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 724 Delaware Ave.
