Schools foundation gets $150,000 in grants
The Buffalo Public Schools Foundation has awarded $150,000 in grants to nine summer programs.
Two of the grants are designed to spur interest in China and Chinese culture. Fifteen high school students and two teachers will travel to China on a study trip with the Confucius Institute at the University at Buffalo; their travel costs will be covered.
Also, a Chinese immersion day camp will give 20 middle school students the chance to interact with 10 students from China who will be visiting.
The foundation also will provide two-year, full-tuition scholarships to Erie Community College to five students.
Four other grants will focus on the fine arts: a middle school music camp; an All-City Marching Band Camp; a dance camp; and a program to help high school students prepare art portfolios and prepare for college interviews.
Two other grants will provide athletic opportunities: a summer lacrosse camp and a soccer camp.
The foundation is supported by donations from the private sector.
