FIO RITO, Dolores Jean

FIO RITO - Dolores Jean Longtime Irvington resident, peacefully passed away June 19, 2010, from complications relating to vascular dementia. Dolores is survived by her husband, William A. Fio Rito and five children, Kathleen Fio Rito, William F. Fio Rito, Robert Fio Rito, Deborah Crisara and John Fio Rito, and a brother, William Metzger. She was the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren, Nicole and Beau D'Agostino, William A. and Aidan Fio Rito, Amanda, Robert E. and Mia Fio Rito, Kristen, Andrew and Peter Crisara and Samantha and Johnna Fio Rito. The daughter of Ruth Dickey and William Metzger, Dolores was born on October 6, 1932 at St. Mary's Hospital in Buffalo. She had a twin sister, Diane Harning, who preceded her in death on February 23, 2007. On June 6, 1953, she was married in an impressive West Point military wedding, against a setting of white gladioli and palms. Dolores and Lt. Fio Rito spent the next year stationed at the USAF Air Base, Greenville, MS where their first daughter, Kathleen was born. In 1955, the family was transferred to the Bitburg Air Base, Germany, where Lt. Fio Rito would receive his training to become a USAF fighter pilot and Dolores would give birth to two sons, William M. and Robert. Following five years of military service, Dolores and Bill moved to California where Dolores gave birth to her youngest daughter, Deborah. In 1962 Dolores and Bill finally settled in Irvington, NY to raise their four children. In 1971 Dolores gave birth to her fifth child and youngest son, John. Dolores found outlets for her endless energy and artistic creativity through cooking, painting, music, quilting, knitting and needlepoint. She was a leader and craftswoman who founded several grass roots workshops, which included religious studies, book clubs and various types of art classes. You are an extraordinary woman, Mom, an exceptional folk artist and teacher. We will miss you dearly. In keeping with our mother's wishes- "just a memorial service with family" will be held.
