Dr. Edward H. Snell, senior scientist at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute in Buffalo and assistant professor at the University at Buffalo, has published an International Union of Crystallography monograph series book titled "Macromolecular Crystallization and Crystal Perfection," with professor Naomi E. Chayen of Imperial College London and professor John R. Helliwell of the University of Manchester. The book, published by Oxford University Press, addresses the science and practice behind growing high-quality crystals and then obtaining the best diffraction data from them.

The University at Buffalo appointed Dr. Leonardo G. Fugoso a clinical assistant professor of neurology at UB and a general neurologist at the Jacobs Neurological Institute. He did his residency in neurology at the State University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn and fellowships in clinical motor physiology and movement disorders at the Neurological Institute of New York, New York Presbyterian Medical Center, New York. Previously, he practiced as a general outpatient neurologist at Olean Medical Group, Olean.

Dr. Roopa Thapar, a research scientist at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, presented a seminar at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source Users Symposium. Her seminar, "A Phosphorylation-Dependent Conformational Switch Regulates Histone mRNA Recognition and Turnover by Stem Loop Binding Protein," was given at an RNA crystallography session.

Emeritus Senior Living, a Seattle-based company with locations in Amherst, was honored with the 2010 Best of the Best Award by the Assisted Living Federation of America. The 2010 winners were profiled in the May/June issues of the federation's magazine, Assisted Living.

Emeritus Senior Living was recognized for three innovative programs: Home Visit Program, Northeast Division Dining Contest and "E&Me" Intranet. Emeritus at Bassett Manor and Emeritus at Bassett Park Manor, which specialize in assisted living and memory care services for seniors, are located on St. Gregory Court and Bassett Road in Amherst.
