1. REVENUE LOSS
Boston Celtics forward Rasheed Wallace (above) has told coach Doc Rivers that he plans to retire. The NBA's home office, which collected the fines from Wallace's 300-plus career technical fouls, plans to announce pay cuts later this week.
2. FASHION STATEMENT
The Cleveland Cavaliers have changed their uniform colors for the upcoming season, deepening the original wine and brightening the original gold colors the team used exclusively from 1970-83. It may not help them re-sign LeBron James, but it may get Venus Williams to agree to terms.
3. HIT THE HORNS
Fans at the Los Angeles Lakers' victory party on Monday used vuvuzelas, the horns heard during World Cup games in South Africa, to greet their heroes. Based on the headaches caused by the vuvuzelas, we really do have a problem stopping undesireables at the border.
4. GOING, GOING ...
The USGA received some criticism for its set-up of the Pebble Beach course for the U.S. Open. Perhaps it's because one of Y.E. Yang's putts on No. 14 on Friday just came to a halt.
5. LONG TRIP HOME
Portugal put on one of the great offensive shows in World Cup history Monday with a 7-0 win over North Korea. Think the North Koreans are anxious to explain that result to their government officials when they get back home?
