Got you covered
If throwing an old T-shirt over your swimsuit doesn't cut it anymore, check out some of the season's stylish cover-ups.
The idea is to make one an integral part of your beach or poolside ensemble -- not just an afterthought.
There are skirts, of course, but also tunics, shirts and cover-up dresses so cute, they may go beyond the shore and become a summertime favorite for anytime.
Men in beards
In honor of Father's Day, here's a nod to the new book, "The Little Book of Beards" by O.S. Belgie (Spruce/Octopus Publishing Group, $9.99).
What's here: 40 illustrated bearded looks and information regarding each one. What the particular beard style says about the guy, for starters. Tips on how to grow it. And also who else sports the look.
For example, the goatee is worn by "style-conscious sportsmen looking for extra edge and reduced wind resistance." The Chin Curtain? Also worn by Abraham Lincoln and some rock musicians (always with aviator sunglasses).
Entertaining casually this summer? Here's a favorite hostess look from designer Kate Spade: "A white linen shell and one long strand of pearls, tied in a loose knot, worn over marine blue capris."
Oh, and go barefoot. It's summer, you know.
Here's a refresher course in skin protection, from the Women's Dermatologic Society:
*Apply a broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher 30 minutes before going outdoors.
*Use a golf-ball-size amount of sunscreen to cover your entire body. Reapply every two hours, even on cloudy or cool days.
*Cover lips with a sun-protective lip balm or sunscreen.
*Check expiration dates on sunscreen.
*Seek shade whenever possible or use a sunshade.
*Wear a broad-brimmed hat, preferably with a back flap, to shade your face, ears and neck.
*Protect your eyes with UV-protective sunglasses.
*Wear tightly-woven, sun-protective clothing with long sleeves and legs.
Two polishes to try out: Revlon nail enamel and Sally Hansen Insta-Dri nail polish.
"Revlon's Lilac Pastelle and Minted offer a sweet take on summer's pastel nail trend, while Sally Hansen's Insta-Dri shades in Sea Breeze and Urgent Orchid provide more pop," reports the Washington Post.
"My dad was the smartest, most decent, most perceptive person I've ever known. But he was a card-carrying member of the Fashion Club For Men Who Wear Bermuda Shorts With The Waist Up Around Their Armpits, Not To Mention Sandals With Dark Socks."
