The Rev. Gus Guppenberger, a Glenmary mission priest, will discuss the ministry of the Glenmary Home Missioners in Appalachia and other areas during Masses this weekend in St. Clare Catholic Church, 193 Elk St., and next Saturday and June 27 in St. Brigid Catholic Church, 18 Gibson St., Bergen.
Study sessions to begin
"First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God," a 10-session DVD-and Web-based study of the historical Jesus and the kingdom of God, will begin at 7 p.m. Monday in Pilgrim-St. Luke's United Church of Christ, 335 Richmond Ave.
Sessions are free and open to the public and will continue Mondays through Aug. 30.
Classes, which will feature John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg, two of the world's leading Jesus scholars, on location throughout Galilee and Jerusalem, will be led locally by the Rev. M. Bruce McKay and other clergy and lay leaders of the church.

Spong to lecture
The Rev. John Shelby Spong, retired bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, N. J., will be guest lecturer for the first-week interfaith lecture series at Chautauqua Institution, June 28 through July 2.
Talks on the theme "Eternal Life: A New Vision" will be at 2 p.m. daily in the Hall of Philosophy.
