The Buffalo Blizzard Girls Under-14 hockey spring season team comprised from members of the state champion Bisons Under-14 team is 12-0 after winning the prestigious Pro Hockey Ponytail Challenge last weekend in Toronto.

The Blizzard went 6-0 in the event and secured the title with a 4-1 win over the Connecticut Yankees.

Members of the team include Jill Battista, Taylor Cianfriano, Allison Gasuik, Madeline Grisko, Alana Herne, Julianna Iafallo, Rachel Lenard, Rachael Moss, Anna Orzechowski, Jenn Parker, Ellen Plunkett, Brandy Streeter, Lizzy Viola, Megan Wall, Maddie Welch and Kathryn Yoder. The coaches are Tom Iafallo, Kevin Orzechowski, Don Battista and Brian Gasuik.

The team will be at home for its next tournament, July 9-11 at the Amherst Center, as it hosts the North American Prospects Tournament.

Michael Blabac, the goalie on the United States sled hockey team that won the gold medal in the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, will be a special guest at Sunday's ninth annual Jog for the Jake 5-kilometer race at Delaware Park and on the Nichols School campus.

Blabac, who was diagnosed and treated for multiple sclerosis at the Jacobs Neurological Institute, will start the children's race at 8:45 a.m. and will congratulate the winners of the 5K races.

University of Pittsburgh catcher Cory Brownsten (Lockport) was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-East Region first team. Brownsten batted .395 with a .993 fielding average. He made the all-tournament team at the Big East Championship after batting .417 in three games.


Lakeside Beach State Park in Waterport will have a grand opening ceremony for the newest disc golf course in Western New York at 10:45 a.m. Saturday.

More than 60 disc golfers from throughout Western New York will play two rounds at the Shore Winds Disc Golf Course, which provides scenic views with several of the finishing holes overlooking Lake Ontario.


BASEBALL: Sports Performance Park at Eastern Hills Mall will hold baseball summer camps the weeks of July 12-16 and Aug. 9-13. Camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes lunch. All participants receive a cap and T-shirt. SOCCER: Free tickets, courtesy of Mineo & Sapio Italian Sausage, for FC Buffalo's weekend games at All High Stadium will be available for fans who view today's 10 a.m. World Cup game between the United States and Slovenia at Papa Jake's, 1672 Elmwood Ave. The National Premier Soccer League amateur team plays FC Sonic Lehigh Valley on Saturday and Pocono Snow on Sunday, both at 3 p.m.
