AMHERST -- Families and friends of graduates packed the University at Buffalo's Alumni Arena this morning for commencement ceremonies on the university's North Campus.
12:13 p.m.: UB President John Simpson addressed the graduates. Here's a portion of his remarks:
11:38 a.m.: Here's a portion of Sen. Charles Schumer's remarks this morning:
11:37 a.m.: Graduates have begun receiving their diplomas. Diplomas are going out by department, and departments have been organized alphabetically, with African American Studies first, and Visual Media last.
10:45 a.m.: In addressing the graduates, Schumer told them many consider the college years the best times in one's life. He then said they will never have a better late-night snack than at Jim's Steakout, or a better beer than a draft at the Steer.
10:24 a.m.: Sen. Charles Schumer has been announced as a guest of honor.
10:15 a.m.: UB President John B. Simpson will speak at today's general commencement. There will have been 13 other commencement ceremonies at the university between April 30 and May 22.
All of the graduates are seated (finally).
10:08 a.m.: Graduates are still filing into their seats -- about 5,750 will receive their degrees today, according to the university's press office.
Among those expected to take part in today's ceremony is Dan Bishop, a UB wrestler whose goal was to walk across stage after suffering a broken neck in March.
