Carolina 2, Montreal 1: Eric Staal scored 2:55 into the third period as the Hurricanes won for the third time in four games. The Habs remained in a three-way tie for sixth in the East.

Tampa Bay 2, Pittsburgh 0: The Lightning's Steven Stamkos scored his 46th goal to edge within one of NHL leader Sidney Crosby. Tampa Bay had lost 14 of its previous 18 overall.

Chicago 4, Minnesota 0: Antti Niemi made 21 saves for his seventh shutout of the season as the Blackhawks won for just the third time in 10 games.

Dallas 5, San Jose 1: Steve Ott had three goals for his first career hat trick, scoring short-handed early in the first period and adding even-strength and power-play goals for the Stars.

Anaheim 5, Colorado 2: Five different players scored for the Ducks as they improved to 7-1-0 in their last eight meetings with the Avalanche, scoring 20 goals in four straight wins in Denver.

Calgary 2, Phoenix 1: Miikka Kiprusoff made 29 saves and the Flames moved within two points of eighth-place Colorado for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

Around the rinks

Phoenix Coyotes: Signed defenseman Chris Summers, one of their two first-round draft picks in 2006, to an entry level contract. He'll report to the team's AHL affiliate in San Antonio. Summers just finished his senior season at the University of Michigan, where he was team captain and had four goals and 12 assists in 40 games.
