William F. Scott, car salesman, World War II veteran Dec. 3, 1926 -- March 29, 2010

William F. Scott, a car salesman who served in the Merchant Marine during World War II, died Monday in his home in Amherst. He was 83.

Born in Buffalo, Mr. Scott was a graduate of Lafayette High School, and while serving in the Merchant Marine was based in the Atlantic, Pacific and Middle East. He was discharged in 1946. Following his service, he campaigned for Merchant Marine veterans to receive the same health care benefits as other military veterans.

Mr. Scott was a car salesman for more than 40 years, most recently employed at One Stop Auto Sales in Lancaster.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, the former Margaret "Peggy" Murphy; and three stepdaughters, Kerry Maxwell, Maureen Ver and Patricia Busch.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. today in St. Timothy Catholic Church, 565 East Park Drive, Town of Tonawanda.
