SUV strikes woman, 85, in crosswalk, killing her

LOCKPORT -- An 85-year-old city woman died Tuesday morning after she was struck by a sport utility vehicle while crossing at Walnut and Cottage streets.

Virginia Barnwell of Spalding Street was walking north in the crosswalk on Cottage Street at about 10 a.m. when she was struck by an SUV driven by Robert Payne Sr., 70, of Wrights Corners, Traffic Capt. Michael Neithe said. Payne was turning from Cottage onto Walnut at the time, Neithe said.

The victim was pronounced dead in Eastern Niagara Hospital. The investigation is continuing.

Thefts, threats alleged by Falls motel owner

NIAGARA FALLS -- Niagara Falls police are investigating the complaints of a motel owner who said a Lockport man who is a frequent customer at the motel has threatened to kill him and has stolen money from his cash register.

Police said the motel is in the 6800 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard. The tenant, police said, has complained on several occasions since January about bedbug bites and has threatened to sue the owner. Police said the manager has surrendered from $3,000 to $4,000 to the tenant following repeated complaints.

Police added that when the manager refused to surrender more money on Monday, the tenant went behind the counter and took $50 from the cash drawer at 7 p.m. and $45 at 11:30 p.m.

Police say man threw rocks at officers

West Seneca police investigating a report early Monday of a disturbance on Seneca Street said a drunken man threw rocks at officers.

Police arriving in the 4100 block of Seneca at about 1:30 a.m. were confronted by a man screaming obscenities who then threw rocks at them, police said.

Juan A. Maiorana, 24, of Lackawanna, was charged with disorderly conduct. He is scheduled to appear in West Seneca Town Court on April 16.
