Gladys Copeland, active member of three Buffalo churches June 10, 1922 -- March 27, 2010

Gladys Copeland of Buffalo, who was active in her community and with three city churches before her health began to fail last fall, died Saturday. She was 87.

Born in Pea Ridge, N.C., she moved to Buffalo in 1945. She was an active member of Antioch, Shiloh and Free Spirit Baptist congregations over the years.

She left Shiloh Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board, in 1987 and started the Usher Board at Free Spirit Baptist before returning to Shiloh Baptist four years ago, said her granddaughter, Charmion Davis-Flood.

She also was treasurer for many years for the Beverly Road Block Club and regularly raised money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

She liked to cook, bake, can and garden.

Her husband, James Harding Copeland, died in 1987.

Survivors include a daughter, Gladys Davis; a son, James E.; and two sisters, Ada Abrams and Ellen Dunham.

A memorial service will be held at noon Thursday in Shiloh Baptist Church, 15 Pine St.
