Defense makes adjustments

UB's defense will get a different look not only schematically but with personnel as well. Four new starters have to be found the most important being all-league safety Mike Newton. Against Kent State, the Bulls final game of the regular season, UB started the game in nickel defense and didn’t allow any points in the first half for the since Turner Gill’s first game as coach against Temple.

Here's the official defensive starting lineup for the Kent State game:

Assuming that the incoming freshmen don’t win jobs, it’s not out of the question that the lineup you see above could be the one that hits the field for the season opener against Rhode Island. The obvious real concern on defense is the team’s ability to adjust from a 4-3 to a multiple defense with a 3-4 base. Defensive coordinator William Inge says the adjustment has been smooth and a lot of that has to do with quickness all over the field.
