Man claiming to have bomb is held after standoff

NIAGARA FALLS -- A standoff between police and a man claiming to have a bomb ended with the man's arrest early Sunday morning.

The man, who was holed up in the trunk of a car at Hyde Park Boulevard and D Street, was taken into custody after a robot opened the trunk and police fired pepper balls into the car. No explosives were discovered.

The man's identity is being withheld by police. Streets in the area of the standoff were closed off and neighborhood residents were alerted.


Deputies arrest two on aggravated DWI charges

Erie County sheriff's deputies made two aggravated driving while intoxicated arrests Saturday night.

Daniel S. Smrek, 45, of Salamanca, was arrested on Pinewood Drive in Springville. Police said his blood-alcohol level was 0.20 percent, well above the legal limit.

In the other arrest, Jennifer N. Tedesco, 25, of Depew, was stopped on Transit Road in Elma. Deputies said her blood-alcohol level was 0.21 percent.

Tedesco and Smrek were released on appearance tickets.
