New York Yankees: General Manager Brian Cashman on Sunday didn't commit to or rule out Joba Chamberlain getting an opportunity to be in the rotation next season. Chamberlain was moved into a relief role Thursday when he lost out to Phil Hughes in the fifth starter competition.

Cleveland Indians: First baseman Russell Branyan is going on the disabled list with a herniated disc in his back, giving the starting job to Matt LaPorta. Indians manager Manny Acta said Sunday that the team didn't think Branyan had enough time to get ready for the season opener April 5 at the Chicago White Sox.

San Francisco Giants: Announced the signing of three pitchers to contract extensions: right-handed starter Matt Cain, left-handed setup man Jeremy Affeldt and right-handed closer Brian Wilson. Terms of Cain's deal, which was extended through 2012, were not immediately available Sunday.

Washington Nationals: Ian Desmond, a 24-year-old rookie, was told Sunday by Nationals manager Jim Riggleman that he beat out incumbent Cristian Guzman and will be the opening day shortstop. The 32-year-old Guzman is a two-time All-Star with a .271 career average in 10 seasons.

San Diego Padres: Jon Garland has been named the Padres' Opening Day starter by manager Bud Black. Garland, who in January signed a one-year deal worth $4.7 million which includes a $600,000 buyout for 2011, will face Dan Haren and the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix on April 5.

Oakland Athletics: Right-hander Chad Gaudin has agreed to terms with the Athletics to help shore up their injury-riddled pitching staff, three days after being released by the New York Yankees. Gaudin was released by New York on Thursday after losing out to Phil Hughes for the No. 5 slot in the team's rotation.

Buffalo Bisons: Ran their spring training exhibition game record to 6-0 with a 7-2 victory Sunday over the Memphis Redbirds in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Josh Thole and Luis Hernandez had two hits each for the Herd. Jesus Feliciano had a pair of RBIs. Left-hander Bobby Livingston earned the win with four innings of two-run ball. Veteran lefty Adam Pettyjohn tossed three hitless innings of relief. The teams meet again Tuesday in Port St. Lucie.
