>Man holed up in car sparks Falls standoff

NIAGARA FALLS -- Police were at the scene of a standoff at Hyde Park Boulevard and D Street late Saturday, with a man holed up in the trunk of a car.

The man, according to authorities, claimed to have a bomb and threatened to harm himself. Streets in the area of the standoff scene were closed off and neighborhood residents were alerted.

>Demolition ordered after West Side fire

Buffalo fire officials are investigating what triggered a fire that heavily damaged a vacant house Saturday afternoon on the West Side.

Firefighters were called at 4:17 p.m. to extinguish the blaze in a 2 1/2 -story house at 58 Rhode Island St., the scene of a previous fire, officials said.

Damage was estimated at $20,000. The house is scheduled to be demolished Monday morning, officials added.

>Amherst woman accused of kicking two officers

An Amherst woman was charged with assaulting two Buffalo police officers after a traffic stop Friday night in Riverside.

Louann M. Nowak, 43, was charged with assault, driving while intoxicated and first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, as well as traffic violations, Buffalo police said.

Police said Nowak was swerving and driving without headlights when she tried to turn onto Heyward Avenue and almost struck a police vehicle. After her arrest, she kicked two officers in the face while at Erie County Medical Center, police added.

>Gang attack leaves woman with head wound

A woman told police she was attacked by a gang of females at about 3 a.m. Saturday at Walden Avenue and Harmonia Street.

The victim was with friends when she was struck in the head with an unknown object, police said.

Police said seven stitches were required to close the wound.

>Man invited to 'party' is victim of car theft

A 53-year-old Buffalo man thought three young women had invited him out to "party," police said.

Instead, they stole his car.

The man met the three, in their late 20s or early 30s, while in a McDonald's restaurant on Main Street, Buffalo police said Saturday.

The three drove off in a dark van, and the man followed behind in his 2008 Chrysler to Michigan Avenue and Northampton Street, where the man hopped into the van, according to police.

One of the women began to grope the man, who was then pepper-sprayed, said police, who added that his keys were stolen, along with $12, and he was pushed from the van. The three then took off in his vehicle.

>2 arrested after attack in East High School gym

Two teenagers were charged with beating up a juvenile at a Buffalo high school on Friday.

Several attackers jumped the juvenile at about 1 p.m. in the gym of East High School, 820 Northampton St., Buffalo police said.

Police made two arrests -- a 15- and 17-year-old, both charged with first-degree assault and second-degree gang assault.

The 17-year-old also was charged with petit larceny for stealing the victim's cell phone, police said.
