DOWNTOWN BUFFALO -- Bishop Edward U. Kmiec presided over Palm Sunday services today at St. Joseph Cathedral.

The Mass, celebrated the Sunday before Easter, includes the blessing and distribution of palms to churchgoers and typically is recognized as the beginning of Holy Week.

Christians worldwide take the day to recognize Jesus Christ's entry into Jerusalem leading up to his crucifixion.

The day was also being celebrated in the holy city at a time when the Catholic church and Pope Benedict XVI are facing a period of turmoil regarding the handling of a sex abuse crisis.
