Organizers of Buffalo's Dyngus Day festivities gathered at the Central Terminal this morning to dedicate a new park and launch the event, which will take place April 5.
The day-long event after Easter is a celebration of Polish heritage that includes a parade in Buffalo's Polonia district, polka music and dancing. One traditional flirting custom involves women squirting men with water and men swatting women with pussy willow branches.
"Buffalo is the Dyngus Day capital of the world," said organizer Marty Biniasz. "There's gonna be more polkas being danced and played than anywhere else on the planet."
Biniasz joined Dyngus Day Buffalo co-founder Eddy Dobosiewicz and Buffalo polka band Those Idiots today at the traffic circle at Memorial Drive and Paderewski Drive to plant Pussy Willow Garden.
"We just got done planting a couple full pussy willow bushes in the hopes that we'll have ample supply of pussy willows for future generations growing here on the East Side," Biniasz said.
Watch today's planting and stay until the end for a hearty "Na zdrowie!" (a Polish salute) from Buffalo polka band Those Idiots:
