The Buffalo Regals Tier I Midget team won another New York State Amateur Hockey Association championship. The crew led by General Manager Robert Maxick and head coach Mike Mondoux won its 13th straight title over the weekend, securing a trip to the USA Hockey National Championships by beating Wheatfield, 6-3, in the title game Sunday in Rochester.
Members of the team include Derek Blanchard, Dylan Blujus, Chris Bradley, Joseph Casale, Harrison Civin, Michael Crowley, Matthew Darlak, Tyler Gjurich, Seth Hamilton, Thomas Hanna, Joshua Kielich, Carl Lester, Daniel Mele, Vince Pettrone, Shane Reese, Michael Rotolo, Ryan Sedney, David Seward, Alex Silvia and Jase Stahlecker. Mondoux's assistant coaches include Anthony Tomasula, John Coyle and Eric Doering.
The Regals, who will return to action in the national tournament April 7-11 in Chicago, weren't the only area team to recently qualify for nationals next month.
The Niagara Junior Purple Eagles Tier II Midget Minor team won the state championship over the weekend in Long Island to earn a bid to the USA Hockey National Championships. The Junior Purple Eagles won five games in the state tournament, outscoring their opponents, 35-3. The nation's No. 2-ranked team secured its trip to nationals with a 4-1 win over the Buffalo Bisons. The national tournament will be April 7-11 in West Chester, Pa.
Members of the team include: Brandon Washburn, Sean Dungan, Adam Dikeman, Austin Crossley, Patrick Thompson, Ryan Stayner, Phil Kane, Steve Gentner, Tyler Tubinis, Chris Chapin, Aaron Wanat, Charlie Stein, Cody Wagner, Cullen Hensley, Jon Haynes, Bryan Komasara, Luke Hazelet, Derek Stein, Alex Wagner and Nick Bruno. The head coach is John Bruno who is assisted by Dave Tubinis, Bill Wagner and Rick Stein.
Niagara's 14-and-under Tier II girls team also qualified for nationals by winning the state tournament two weeks ago at Saranac Lake. Members of the team that will participate in nationals April 7-11 in East Lansing, Mich., include Jillian Long, Alexis Becker, Natalie Goeddertz, Lauren March, Katie Marotta, Taylor Scheuing, Alyssa Dollendorf, Maddi Toczek, Caitlin Mitchell, Marielle Buffamonte, Annmarie Catalano, Alyssa Cardina, Paloma D'Auria, Brianna Cardina, Taylor Schiffhauer, Abby Nashwinter, Rachel Ziarnowski and Jasmine Ricard. The team is coached by John Dollendorf. Assistant coaches are Bob Schiffhauer, Pete Becker and Joe Cardina.
The Orchard Park Gymsters level 4 gymnastics team placed first at the early season states in Utica on Sunday. Winning gold medals for the Gymsters were: Rebecca Obrochta (floor), Libby Berry (beam), Kiera Callahan (beam), Ryleigh Whitcomb (level 5, floor), Anna Giannicchi (level 5, bars) and Carrissa Turner (level 7, vault).
Silver medals were awarded to Becky Wajda, Kylie Backus, Jenna Mullett, Madison Wild, Emily Zimmerman, Lauren Blair, Shannon Coyne, Courtney Bondanza, Obrochta and Whitcomb. Jordan Gray, Sam Smith, Berry and Obrochta won bronze medals.
Todd Miller and Ken White teamed up to win the Buffalo Tennis Series men's 30 and over doubles title Sunday at the Miller Tennis Center. Miller and White defeated Mark Ahrens and Barry Olsen, 6-3, 6-3.
Orchard Park senior Phil Aronica and West Seneca West junior Courtney Otto, members of Buffalo's STAR swim club, recently qualified for the USA Junior National team that will compete in Dublin, Ireland, from April 25-May 4. Aronica finished third in the 100-yard backstroke at the 2010 National Club Swimming Association Junior Nationals in Orlando, Fla., with a time of 49.41 seconds. Otto finished second in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:16.51 to qualify for the team.

INLINE HOCKEY: The Town of Cheektowaga is accepting coaching applications for the Buffalo Storm travel season. Coaches are needed in the following divisions: squirt (under-10), peewee (U12) bantam (U14), midget (U16) and midget (18U).
