Homicide, suicide attempt probed

Amherst police are investigating a possible homicide and attempted suicide of an elderly couple Sunday at the Amberleigh Retirement Community on Maple Road in Amherst.

Virginia Bunz, 89, was found dead in her apartment at 10:25 a.m. Her husband, John Bunz, 90, was found with self-inflicted wounds, police said.

"It's being investigated as a possible domestic-related homicide," said Amherst Lt. Ronald Farszmil.

When asked if Mr. Bunz had been charged, Farszmil declined to comment Sunday. He said that the investigation is continuing and that more details will be announced today.

Mr. Bunz was taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment of injuries, police reported. A hospital spokesman said he was still being evaluated.

Frank Miosi, executive director of Amberleigh, said it's unclear what exactly happened to the elderly couple.

"It may also be that he tried to kill himself after seeing her dead. They were close," he said.

Police did not reveal details about the nature of the wounds, but Miosi said they did not involve a shooting.

The retirement community is home to 260 people.

"We're treating it as an isolated incident. There was no harm to anyone else," Miosi said.
