AUST, Bradley J. M.D.
AUST - Bradley J. M.D. Dr. J. Bradley Aust was born September 8, 1926 in Buffalo, NY. He grew up in Niagara Falls and graduated from LaSalle High School in 1943. He was recruited into the Navy V-12 program and finished his pre-med requirements at Union College. The Navy then sent him to the University of Buffalo Medical School. After graduating with an MD in 1949, he married his high school sweetheart, Connie MacMullin. They moved to Minneapolis where Brad completed his internship and residency, earned an M.S. in Physiology and a PhD in Surgery, and became a Professor of Surgery at the University of Minnesota. His training was interrupted by the Korean War and he served two years in the Navy, first at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital and then on a mobile surgical team in Korea before returning to Minneapolis. In 1965 he was recruited to be the first chairman of the Department of Surgery at the fledgling University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio. By the time he retired in 1996 after 30 years his department had trained hundreds of surgeons, many of them practicing in the San Antonio area. He was president of The Texas Surgical Association, The Western Surgical Association, The Southern Surgical Society and served on many academic committees at the state and national level. Brad was an avid hunter, an accomplished photographer, a lover of classical music and wine, a skier, cyclist, and tennis player. He was a member of the Oak Hills Rotary Club. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Connie and their six children, Jay Aust and wife Christi Carletti, Barbara Hodge, Mary Lou Gallion and husband John, Tracey Norment and husband Mike, Dr. Bonnie Aust and husband Dr. Peter Rotwein, and Linda Aust; 12 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren; also surviving are his brother Dr. John Aust and wife Bethany.
