James J. Sweeney, 91, retired accountant, WWII veteran <br> April 11, 1918 -- March 18, 2010

James J. Sweeney of Amherst, a retired accountant, died Thursday at Hospice Buffalo in Cheektowaga, after a brief illness.

He was 91.

Mr. Sweeney was born in Brooklyn. He graduated from Regis High School and Fordham University.

Mr. Sweeney was in the Army during World War II, with a large portion of his time spent serving in Iran. He rose to the rank of captain.

After the war, Mr. Sweeney worked for various accounting firms in the New York City area. In 1959, he came to Buffalo, where he worked as controller for Graphic Controls Corp. for several years.

He owned various real estate holdings in the Buffalo area.

Mr. Sweeney was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Williamsville.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Gertrude Maher; and five sons, James F., Robert E., Brian W., Paul A. and Thomas E.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Monday in SS. Peter and Paul Church, 5480 Main St., Williamsville.
