Teen pleads not guilty in Genesee St. slaying
Dontae E. Coble was indicted Thursday in the fatal stabbing of Daniel Smalls after a late-night altercation Feb. 13 at a Genesee Street party almost a month before the accused turned 16.
Coble, of Herman Street, pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Smalls, 18, of Lisbon Avenue. He was arraigned before Erie County Judge Sheila A. DiTullio and ordered to remain jailed without bail.
He can only be prosecuted as a juvenile offender. If convicted, he could face a prison term of 15 years to life.
The fatal stabbing occurred at 11 p.m. in the 2200 block of Genesee, Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III said.
Coble, whose half brother, Francois Mitchell, 25, was Buffalo's 55th homicide of 2009, was arrested March 9 after Homicide Detectives Michael M. Acquino, Michael A. Mordino, Mary E. Gugliuzza and Noreen E. Walsh tracked him to an apartment in the 300 block of Herman Street, where he was living.
Drug charges lodged following traffic stop
NIAGARA FALLS -- A driver who pulled out into the path of a police cruiser in the 1700 block of Pine Avenue about 2:30 a.m. Thursday had a cup of vodka and 2.3 grams of crack cocaine but no driver's license, police said.
Brandon H. Carter, 21, of 10th Street, was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, consumption of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle and aggravated unlicensed operation. He also was charged with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
Stroke victim's home targeted by burglar
NIAGARA FALLS -- Police are investigating the burglary of a home in the 500 block of Fourth Street while the occupant was hospitalized.
Missing are $290 in cash and two bottles of prescription drugs. The victim, who alerted police Thursday, said that she was hospitalized for a stroke for a week but that the door to the house was unlocked.
Washer, dryer, pipes stolen from Falls home
NIAGARA FALLS -- Copper pipe and appliances were stolen from a house in the 2000 block of Lockport Street overnight, police said Thursday.
Police said the resident left the home late Wednesday and returned just before noon on Thursday, when she discovered a side door had been kicked in. She said the copper pipe, valued at $250, and washer and dryer were stolen from the basement.
