Spoiler to debut next week

NASCAR will officially move from the wing to the more traditional spoiler at next weekend's race at Martinsville Speedway.

Martinsville had been targeted for the transition, and NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton confirmed Wednesday that spoilers have been shipped to Sprint Cup teams and will be used for the first time at the Virginia short track.

The spoiler was tested by 25 Cup teams on Tuesday at Talladega Superspeedway, and there's a two-day test scheduled for next week at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Nadal stops upset run

Rafael Nadal restored order on a day of upsets with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 fourth-round victory over big-serving American John Isner at the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday, after Novak Djokovic and Elena Dementieva were ousted.

Seeking his third title at Indian Wells, No. 3-seed Nadal withstood Isner's serve-and-volley game under the searing afternoon sun in front of a partisan crowd backing one of only two American men remaining. Andy Roddick is the other.

Bandits' Tavares honored

John Tavares of the Buffalo Bandits has been named the Overall and Offensive Player of the Week by the National Lacrosse League.

Tavares had a memorable weekend, scoring two overtime goals in games in Toronto and Boston. Those goals improved Buffalo's record to 5-6 and put the Bandits back in the playoff race. Tavares had seven goals and four assists in the two weekend games.
