Arinze Onuaku, Syracuse's fifth-year senior center, will not play Friday night against No. 16 seed Gonzaga and is doubtful for Sunday's game if the Orange move on, Orange coach Jim Boeheim said today.
Onuaku suffered a knee injury during the Orange's Big East Tournament loss to Georgetown. Boeheim also wanted to clarify that he didn't speak with anyone from the NCAA Tournament committee about Onuaku's availability. Boeheim said that when Onuaku was hurt, he was tested when he returned to Syracuse and there was chance he could return to practice by last Monday.
But by Sunday, Boeheim said it was clear that Onuaku wouldn't be able to return that quickly.
"We never talked to anybody from the NCAA committee,'' Boeheim said. "I never did, the doctor never did and the trainer never did. We're still in the same position we were on Sunday."
Onuaku is still being treated and there's still pain when he places pressure on his leg.
"He's still very sore,'' Boeheim said.
