Wales woman injured in crash of her SUV

A Town of Wales woman was hospitalized following a crash early Sunday in the town, the Erie County Sheriff's Office reported.

Deputies say Lana M. Hergert, 39, was driving a Ford Escape at 5:55 a.m. on Big Tree Road when the SUV crossed the center line and hit a utility pole. She was reported in fair condition in Erie County Medical Center.

Collision injuring two results in DWI charge

Two people were injured and a Buffalo man was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated following a crash at about 2 p.m. Sunday.

An SUV attempted to turn onto Kenmore Avenue from Doyle Avenue and collided with a westbound sedan, said Town of Tonawanda Police Detective Timothy M. Connolly.

The driver of the sedan, Paul D. Partin, 53, of the Town of Tonawanda, suffered broken ribs and was hospitalized. His wife, Christine, 47, suffered bumps and bruises and was taken to a hospital for treatment, Connolly said.

The driver of the SUV, Paul J. Darling, 28, was charged with DWI and second-degree vehicular assault.

Residents evacuated in Hotel Lafayette fire

A small fire broke out Sunday afternoon in the historic Hotel Lafayette in downtown Buffalo.

Fire crews responded at 5:22 p.m. to the landmark seven-story structure at 391 Washington St. that is set to close April 1, according to a fire official.

The fire was confined to one room on the third floor. The hotel is used primarily as short-term emergency housing for about 40 clients of social services agencies.

Firefighters were able to safely escort residents from the building, and no injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation. Fire officials estimated damage at $10,000 to the building and $3,000 to the contents.

Man jumped, robbed of backpack, phone

A local man told Buffalo police he lost a $400 cell phone and his backpack after he was jumped by a would-be robber at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Delaware Avenue and Allen Street.

The victim told police someone came up behind him, punched him in the back of the head and tried to take his backpack. As they fought, the pack fell to the ground.

When the fight ended and the victim looked for the backpack, it was gone. The $150 Dakine pack contained his Droid cell phone and $60 cash.

3 charged after crack is found in East Side home

Buffalo police found crack cocaine and made three arrests after receiving a complaint about a home in the 200 block of Sears Street on the East Side.

Charged with felony counts of possession of a controlled substance are two occupants of the home -- Vokira Small, 26, and Gerald Hunley, 23 -- and Victor Small, 24, of Parkdale Avenue. Vokira Small and Hunley also are charged with a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child because they were living in the home with two children.

Buffalo shooting victim is in stable condition

A Buffalo man is in stable condition and recovering in Erie County Medical Center from a gunshot wound he suffered Sunday.

Police said in a report that Cordarrell Anderson, 20, of Burlington Avenue, was shot in the lower abdomen while walking on Thatcher Avenue on the city's East Side at about 4:20 a.m.
