Program targeting uninsured to offer testing, information
NIAGARA FALLS -- A free public program emphasizing health insurance for the uninsured is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday in City Council Chambers at City Hall, 745 Main St.
The program, titled "Cover the Uninsured: A Day of Health," will include information on eligibility for reduced-cost health insurance, along with blood-pressure testing and information on screening for cancer, diabetes, food stamps and the Head Start education program.
The state Health Department is sponsoring the program in cooperation with Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center and the City of Niagara Falls to encourage residents to remain healthy.
Board president announces bid for re-election
The Lewiston-Porter School Board has its first candidate for the 2010 elections.
Sitting board President Keith Fox announced last week he will seek re-election for a second three-year term.
Candidates can download petitions off the school district's Web site to be turned in by April 19 with 64 signatures. Elections are May 18. Other seats set to expire belong to board members Michael Gentile and James Sperduti.
Enrollment opens at YWCA for preschool programs
LOCKPORT -- YWCA of Niagara enrollment packets are available for preschool and integrated five-day programs, and can be picked up at the Y's site at 32 Cottage St.
The preschool program offers three morning and afternoon sessions held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 3-year-olds. There are morning sessions only on Tuesday and Thursday for 2-year-old participants. Both programs are held at 32 Cottage St.
The integrated five-day program for 3-year-olds is offered through a partnership with the Lockport City School District and will be held at a Lockport elementary school.
In addition, the YWCA of Niagara will offer two morning and two afternoon sessions of its universal prekindergarten classes, a Lockport City School District initiative. Applications are available at 32 Cottage St. and all Lockport City School District elementary buildings.
All YWCA programs offer opportunities to play, learn and socialize through a variety of age-appropriate experiences. For more information, call preschool director Bernadette Schultz at 433-6714, Ext. 25 or 35.
Registration starts today for annual kid's egg hunt
NIAGARA FALLS -- City children ages 1 to 10 are eligible to participate in the 11th annual Eggs-Pedition egg hunt on March 27 at the golf course clubhouse in Hyde Park, 4545 Porter Road.
Prizes will be awarded in age groups 1 to 4, 5 to 7 and 8 to 10. Preregistration for the free event is required at the Niagara Falls Parks office, 1785 New Road, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today through Friday. Sign-in at the park will begin at 9:30 a.m. the day of the egg hunt, which will take place from 10 to 11 a.m., with prizes including Easter bunnies, Winnie the Pooh and face painting.
