Canisius faces RIT in hockey

Canisius will face No. 1 seed RIT at 4:05 p.m. Friday in the semifinals of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester. No. 3 seed Air Force will face No. 2 Sacred Heart in the other semifinal at 7:35 p.m.

The championship game will be at 7:05 on Saturday after the consolation game at 2 p.m.

All four of the teams swept their best-of-three quarterfinals series over the weekend. The only upset in the seedings was No. 5 Canisius' victory over No. 4 Mercyhurst.

UB shines in track opener

Matt Gac and Becky O'Brien of the University at Buffalo each won two events in the Bulls' outdoor track and field season opener at the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, N.C. UB topped the men's scoring and was second in the women's.

Gac broke UB records in both wins, throwing the hammer 197 feet and the discus 175 feet, 7 inches. O'Brien took the women's shot put (50-4.75) and discus (153-2) in her first UB meet after competing for North Carolina last season.

Rob Golabek (Frontier) led a 1-4 UB sweep of the shot put with a throw of 58-8.50. Other field event winners for the Bulls were Eugene Kennedy in the men's high jump (6-6.75) and Tiffany Maskulinski (Iroquois) in the women's pole vault (12-5.25).

The Bulls also won six events on the track. Ezekiel Porter took the men's 400 meters (48.53) while Allison Grimes won the women's 400 (57.05). Grimes was also part of UB's winning women's 4x400-meter with Natalie Fildes (West Seneca East), Brooklynn Ventura and Jackie Burns (North Tonawanda) in 3:53.37. Dan Harris won the men's 100 in 10.97 while Will Cole (Hamburg) took the men's 400-meter hurdles in 52.56. Jamiee McClary claimed the women's 200 meters in 24.79.

Canisius loses in lacrosse

Albany scored the first 12 goals of the second half to turn a close women's game into a 17-4 victory over Canisius (3-3) on Sunday at the Demske Complex. Ashley Curtis led Canisius with two goals, while Brett Poissant and freshman Lindsey Morgan (Lancaster) each added a score.

A five-goal run in the second half led Denver to a 10-5 men's victory over visiting Canisius (0-3) on Saturday night. Simon Giourmetakis led the Golden Griffins with two goals, while Jimmy Haney added a goal and an assist. Mike Benzinger and Adam Jones had a goal each.

Indoor track

Ithaca College sophomore Emma Dewart (Barker) earned All-America honors in two events at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Greensburg, Ind. Dewart was second in the pentathlon with 3,494 points, 61 behind the champion Kristen Bates of Messiah College (Pa.). Also, Dewart tied for third in the high jump with a leap of 5-5.25.
