Raymond M. Smallback, a retired police chief and highway superintendent, died Sunday in Heritage Park Health Care Center, Jamestown. He was 82.
A 1945 graduate of East Aurora High School and of the FBI Academy, Mr. Smallback was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He held various positions in the East Aurora police force for 35 years before retiring as chief. After moving to the Southern Tier, he was highway superintendent for the Cattaraugus County Town of South Valley.
Mr. Smallback was a member of the Frewsburg and Randolph American Legion posts and the Captains and Lieutenants and Erie County Police Chiefs associations.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, the former Catherine L. Lutz-Porter; three sons, Melvin, Donald and Keith; two daughters, Mary Ellen Weinreiber and Kathleen Lynn Willise; five stepchildren, Michelle Kailer, Paul Porter Jr., Thomas A. Porter, Larry J. Porter and Lori A. Brown; and two sisters, Barbara Manning and Lynda Kittelson.
A memorial service will be scheduled.
