>Drop-off yields 800 pounds of old medicines, drugs

LEWISTON -- More than 800 pounds of old medicines, including 35 pounds of drugs regarded as controlled substances, were incinerated Saturday after being turned in at Niagara County's second annual pharmaceutical drop-off day.

Richard P. Pope, director of the Refuse Disposal District board, said 162 residents brought drugs to the event at Mount St. Mary's Hospital. He said the weight translated into 100,000 doses of over-the-counter medicine and 8,000 doses of controlled substances.
