OLAF FUB SEZ: According to Nobel Prize-winning novelist William Faulkner, born on this date in 1897, "A mule will labor 10 years willingly and patiently for you, for the privilege of kicking you once."


GO WESTERN -- There usually aren't any mules among the dozens of homeless cats and dogs at Pet Connection Programs in Marilla, but if there were, they also would benefit from the country-western themed fundraiser from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the Marilla Fire Hall, Two Rod Road and West Avenue.

For a $10 ticket, you get half a barbecued chicken, two side dishes and a Bananas Foster dessert. There's also a cash bar and live country music, courtesy of West of the Mark and The Band. In addition, there's a huge silent auction and a country-western outfit contest, with a top prize worth $300.


CHICKEN BARBECUE -- The Shriners of Western New York will host a chicken barbecue Sundayat the Shrine Center, 1600 Southwestern Blvd., West Seneca. The chicken barbecue will run from noon to 5 p.m. Presale tickets are on sale at the Shrine Center for $7. Tickets at the door cost $8. Takeout also is available. BARGAIN BIN -- The Ladies Auxiliary of the Town Line Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the Town Line Fire Hall, 5607 Broadway, Lancaster. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Meals on Wheels. Donations of household goods, toys, tools and other salable items are still being accepted if you can drop them off at the fire hall today. DOUBLE RETIREMENT PARTY -- A retirement party for Sal Castiglione and Bill Kluge, uniformed state court officers in Erie County Hall and former Erie County sheriff's deputies assigned to the courthouse, will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. next Friday at Bison City Rod and Gun Club, 511 Ohio St.
