Hitch our wagon - or rail car - to a maple leaf.

One thing Buffalo has going for it that, say, oh, Pittsburgh doesn't is our status as a major gateway to Canada, e.g.:

- CSX pitching new service to shippers - Matt Glynn/The Buffalo News
CSX hopes to make a Lackawanna rail yard a magnet for shipments that arrive at two East Coast ports and are bound for Canada.
It's not enough to make up for the jobs that were lost when the railroad downsized its operations in Buffalo's Frontier Yard. But it's a move in the right direction.

Of course, we should quit all this fooling around and just do it.
Erie and Niagara counties should humbly petition to become part of Ontario. Then we'd really be the gateway to international trade. All the border crossing infrastructure could be built at the new land frontier, where there's lots of room, no bridge bottlenecks and no need to fuss for 20 years over tearing down old houses.
We wouldn't be beholden to the New York Legislature.
   And we'd have health care.
