Art auction season is upon us. Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center completed the second of two high-profile fundraising auctions on Wednesday at Christie's in New York City, with positive if somewhat underwhelming results. The Burchfield Penney Art Center is gearing up for an auction to accompany its Oct. 16 gala.
And on Saturday, the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society (25 Nottingham Court) will hold the 11th incarnation of its less glamorous but no less ambitious "Paint the Town" auction and fundraiser. The Historical Society setup is unique in the world of local art fundraisers. During this week, 50 artists were dispatched to locations around Western New York with instructions to complete a painting in six hours or less.
The works, from the likes of Sonia Penaranda-Taggart, Peter Fowler, Thomas Kegler, Nancy Parisi, Caitlin Krumm and Gerald Mead, will go on the block at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. It's a glitzy, catered affair, led by auctioneer Steve Phillips of the Lodge Auction House.
Tickets are $70 at the door or $50 in advance. For more information, call 873-9644, ext. 318 or visit www.buffalohistory.org.
