Weekends-only inmate faces drug-smuggling charges
MAYVILLE -- A Mayville man who was sentenced to serve weekends in the Chautauqua County Jail faces a felony charge of promoting prison contraband for allegedly smuggling drugs, tobacco and matches into the jail inside a body cavity, Chautauqua County sheriff's officials said.
Terry E. Nichols, 33, of Elmwood Road, who would arrive at the jail on Friday and be released on Sunday, is alleged to have introduced contraband into the jail on several occasions, deputies reported over the weekend.
A search warrant was obtained by police, and Nichols was taken to Westfield Hospital for an X-ray, where it was found he had a quantity of marijuana, tobacco, matches and strikers pushed inside his body.
Besides the felony contraband charge, Nichols was charged with a marijuana possession count, police said. He was taken back to the jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
Driver thought to be asleep was drunk, troopers say
ORANGEVILLE -- Troopers called to a stretch of Route 20A in Orangeville on Sunday for the report of a suspicious vehicle arrived to find a Perry man apparently asleep, according to state police.
On the roadside, troopers found the vehicle occupied by Gregory Bongiovanni, 44, who appeared to be sleeping. Police found him to allegedly be intoxicated and charged him with DWI. He was released pending an appearance in Orangeville Town Court.
Ripley man arrested in sex abuse case
RIPLEY -- A 21-year-old Ripley man was charged with unlawfully dealing with a child and sexual abuse in an incident involving a girl earlier this year, Chautauqua County sheriff's officials reported.
Robert E. Pratt was arrested Monday at his home. The alleged incident took place April 5 in Ripley, said the sheriff's officials, who would not release the girl's age. He was arraigned and taken to Chautauqua County Jail in lieu of $3,500 cash bail or $7,000 property bond.
