Pier repairs: Work continues on Bird Island Pier Friday as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' tug and derrick boat replaces big toe stones in the vicinity of the West Side Rowing Club. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provided $12.3 million to Corps of Engineers for many civil works projects in Western New York, including $400,000 to repair the Bird Island Pier, improve safety and reduce shoreline erosion.

Film set: "Unstoppable," a film starring Denzel Washington is being filmed in and around Olean. Here a Hollywood "pursuit" car with a camera on a boom repositions itself for another take of a speeding train. The scene is at the Maple Road rail crossing in the Town of Portville. The action drama is supposed to be filming in areas around northern Pennsylvania for at least the next couple of weeks. The movie is about an experienced engineer trying to stop a runaway train carrying a cargo of toxic chemicals, according to entertainment reports.
