Paul G. Burke of Hamburg, a U.S. Army veteran, outdoorsman and former National Fuel sub-foreman, died Friday in Mercy Hospital after a long illness. He was 61.

A Buffalo native, Mr. Burke was a hunter and fisherman who was active in a wide variety of organizations, including the Bison City Rod and Gun Club, the Hoover Beach Sportsman Club, the Hamburg Waterfront Revitalization Committee and several veterans organizations.

He was also a volunteer captain of the Excalibur, a specially equipped 30-foot boat used to take youngsters with physical handicaps on outings.

"He knew so many people, and if you knew him, you were his friend from birth to death," said his wife of 38 years, the former Gloria Slon.

Mr. Burke also is survived by a daughter, Kristen Griffin; a son, Paul Jr.; and two brothers, John and Michael.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Francis of Assisi Church on St. Francis Drive in Athol Springs.
